Finally deciding that I needed to hire a personal trainer meant a few different things for me, but the biggest was that I was worse off mentally and physically than I chose to acknowledge for a long time.
I was afraid it was going to be too hard, and that I was going to fail. In the beginning I really doubted myself, I really thought there was absolutely no way I was going to see this through.
I had said forever that there was no way I'd ever be in the gym like that -or count calories, or do cardio. Looking back I clearly see that my coach wouldn't have let me quit. I've seen him do it with others too.
Nearly two years later, I train five days a week, and happily do things i said I'd never do. Shug found a way to redirect a negative outlook towards physical health; and it has changed everything.
Through really damn hard work, and accountability, and effort, and a lot of laughter and trying over and over again, My mental and physical health is the best it's ever been in my adult life.

I first started working with Joe in May of 2024. I had been coming from reversing out of my first prep and after having a wrist surgery. I knew i wanted to take my bodybuilding career in a different direction and had a few friends tell me about Joe. We went out for coffee and talked about what I wanted for myself and what I was expecting from a coach, then immediately began to make a plan.
Coming from a dancer/gymnast background as well as competing in a show, I had a fair amount of knowledge on how to work out. However, Joe’s workouts test me like no other.
Every workout is intense and pushes me to my max. If I am sick or injured, we temporarily change the plan and make it work around it. If I feel like something isn’t benefitting me or I don’t like doing something, we change it. I also appreciate how he explains to me WHY we do things and doesn’t just throw useless information at me.
He cares about the mental well being as much as the physical. Towards the end of summer I was extremely burnt out with work and felt like I was just going through the motions of working out. He took me out one day and we sat down and talked it out. Not only did he listen to everything I had to say and get out of my system but he responded by telling me everything I needed to hear. I require a coach who tells me the tough pills I need to swallow sometimes and he did just that.
We are now beginning our first prep together, he has helped me build my body and really focus on my weak points so much, as well as building my confidence and mental toughness. There are no words to describe how excited I am and how prepared I feel to be going into this next show, and I truly don’t think I would feel this way without Joe. I look forward to everything he is going to help me become.
